How to Use This Calculator
- Choose a direction. "Annual → rates" starts from a salary; "Hourly → annual" starts from an hourly wage.
- Enter the salary or hourly rate.
- Set your schedule: hours per week, days per week, weeks per year, and paid time-off weeks.
- Read the breakdown. You get effective hourly, daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and annual figures. The bar chart lines them up so you can see the scale of each pay period at a glance.
The Formula Explained
Let workedWeeks = weeksPerYear − ptoWeeks. Then:
Paycheck figures (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly) use the full weeksPerYear because paid time off is still paid. The effective hourly rate uses only the weeks you actually work, so it comes out slightly higher.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many working hours are in a year?
The standard figure is 2,080 hours — 40 hours × 52 weeks. Removing two unpaid weeks gives 2,000. Adjust the hours-per-week, weeks-per-year and PTO inputs to match your real schedule.
Is paid time off included in the hourly rate?
For a salaried role, vacation and holidays are paid, so the paycheck figures are based on the full year. The effective hourly number divides salary by the hours you truly work, which is a little higher because you are paid for the weeks you take off.
How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by weekly hours, then by the weeks you work per year — at 40 hours for 52 weeks, that is × 2,080. The "Hourly → annual" mode does this for you and also shows every other cadence.
